Best Everyday Carry Flashlight 2018
The Klarus G10
When Klarus first announced the G10 I was definitely interested in this unique compact flashlight. While tactical flashlights are my favorites, I really enjoy looking at and exploring everyday carry flashlights and outdoor flashlights. The G10 is a really good all-around flashlight. So I’ve had it for a little while now and I’m ready to review this light and tell you what I think about it. In this review, I will be going over the features of the flashlight so you can see what the light has to offer and I’ll be listing out some pros and cons and other notes that are important to know before buying this flashlight. So let’s get started.
Features of the Klarus G10
The G10 is full of excellent features that I’m excited to talk to you about today. Even with all of these features, this torch is still a very user-friendly flashlight which is always a positive thing in my book. We’ll get into the user interface later on, but let’s dive into all that the flashlight has to offer.
Powerful 1800 Lumen Flashlight
The first thing that drew me to this flashlight was the power behind it. 1800 lumens is such an impressive amount of light for a flashlight that is only about four and a half inches in length. This may be one of the most powerful everyday carry flashlights I have seen today. It’s truly impressive to see this amount of power in such a small form-factor that lights up the entire area like it’s daytime.
The G10 features a broader, more diffused beam so that you get a hotspot that is not very defined. However, the G10 still has a maximum being distance of 250 meters so it still has a good throw even though it definitely has a broader beam to it. You can see that it has a slightly shorter reflector with an orange-peel texture and this creates a more diffused beam. This type of beam is excellent for any outdoor activity because you can still see far away while Illuminating the entire area around you. It’s also a great beam for household work if you were working on the garage or fixing an appliance because it will illuminate everything in front of you with no problem.
LED Flashlight Body Style
The next feature I want to talk about is the body style because I think this is a great aspect of the G10. It features a baton style body that makes it easier to slip into your pocket. It also has that removable pocket clip so you can clip it onto your pocket. The clip is really tight and quite difficult to remove so you know it won’t be popping off. The body is made from an aerospace aluminum alloy and has a hard anodized finish giving it that really nice matte look. It has really great heat dissipation fins along the head of the flashlights which is great to see considering how much light and heat this flashlight gives off. With any high lumen flashlight, you can expect it to get hot. It features a knurled texture design that grips very nicely in your hands. This light can also tail stand and you can use it as a lantern which is excellent. I really do love that tail stand feature and I use it more often than not.
Easy User Interface
The G10 has two switches: a side switch and a tail switch. These switches operate independently from one another so you can pick which switch you would prefer to use at any given time. The tail switch has a One-Touch Low feature and the side switch has a built-in memory function. Both switches have a One-Touch Turbo. I find that I take advantage of both switches and I particularly like that they both are able to access the turbo mode immediately. I like the built-in memory function because I like keeping my flashlights usually in that medium mode so long as I can access the turbo mode immediately or quickly. So this is a really great user interface because you can pick which switch you want to use and alternate between the switches if you’d like to. You’re also able to lock out both of the switches if you’re worried about them turning on in your pocket or in an EDC bag. I don’t typically use this feature very often but I still appreciate that it has it because when I go camping I will be using the lockout mode whenever I‘m traveling to my destination during the day.
The G10 features a total of six outputs which gives you a lot of options to choose from. You have four different brightness levels. The turbo mode is at 1800 lumens, the high mode is at 400 lumens, the medium mode is at 100 lumens, and the low mode is at 10 lumens. I was a little surprised to see such a huge jump between the high mode and the turbo mode. I would absolutely like to see a brightness level that is in between the 400 and 1800 lumens that’s maybe around 1000 lumens. It also features a strobe and an SOS mode so you’re prepared for any emergency. Between all these outputs you’re pretty much taken care of in any situation that requires lighting.
USB Rechargeable Flashlight
On the side of the G10, there is a micro USB port that is covered with a little silicone flap that prevents any dust or grime from into that port. I really like USB rechargeable flashlights so I am excited about this feature. It’s really convenient to be able to charge your flashlight while you’re working on the computer or just plugging it into a wall adapter at night while you sleep. With its Intelligent Charging System you’re going to have a safe and secure charging function. This system monitors the charging status, prevents overcharging to protect your battery, and limits the maximum charging current to 1A. You can also check the status of the charging yourself by looking at the charging indicator located on the side switch. It also functions as a battery capacity indicator that gives you a really good idea of where your battery is at and when it’s time to change the batteries or charge the flashlight. Speaking of the batteries, it is an 18650 flashlight and comes with a Klarus 18650 battery with a 3600 mAh capacity. It’s compatible with other batteries which is always a great feature to have. So you can equip the G10 with a single 18650, two CR123A batteries, or two 16340 batteries.
There are a lot of great features in this EDC flashlight and a lot of things to love about it. First, it’s one of the most powerful everyday carry flashlights I’ve seen. The 1800 lumens is incredibly impressive and I do like the broader beam to it. I really like the body style and the compact size of the flashlight which makes it easy to carry in your pocket. The user interface is really easy to learn and is very intuitive. It’s durable, sturdy, USB rechargeable, the pros of this flashlight go on and on.
My only complaint about this flashlight is that there is such a huge jump from the high mode at 400 lumens to the turbo at 1800 lumens. I would really like to see another brightness level in between those two. It’s just too big of a leap in my opinion.
The G10 LED flashlight seems to be all about convenience and it’s really giving you everything you could need in a lighting tool. Whether you’re seasoned user or haven’t owned an LED flashlight before, the G10 is such an easy flashlight to pick up and learn and love. It’s an excellent everyday carry flashlight that would be useful in any outdoor activities such as camping and hiking or even around the house for general use. Definitely make sure to check out the Klarus G10.
