Always be prepared. It’s a great motto to stick by. For those of us with emergency kits or bug-out bags, you understand what being prepared is about. You never know what’s coming around the corner. So today I want to talk about some of the best survival flashlights on the market today.

What is a Survival Flashlight?

A survival flashlight is exactly how it sounds. It’s a flashlight that’s ready to go if an emergency strikes. While each flashlight user has their preference as to what they want in a survival flashlight, you’ll generally find the same features. For example, survival flashlights typically run on alkaline batteries or lithium batteries due to how easy they are to come by and their shelf life. A survival flashlight will often feature a few different outputs, particularly a lower output with higher run times. A survival flashlight will usually be compact and easy to clip onto a backpack or slip into your pocket. Generally, this is what we’re going to be looking at today when we talk about this list of flashlights.

5 Best Survival Flashlights

I’ve compiled a list of awesome LED flashlights that would be excellent for survival purposes. Some of these lights are tactical flashlights, everyday carry flashlights, or general use flashlights. They range greatly, but they could all be used for survival purposes.

Fenix PD35 V2.0 LED Flashlight

Fenix PD35 V2.0 tactical flashlight

The first flashlight I want to look at is the FenixPD35 V2. This LED flashlight runs on either an 18650 battery or two CR123 batteries. This light is a great flashlight option because of its size and features. If you want a survival flashlight that can function as an everyday carry flashlight or a tactical flashlight, then the PD35 V2 is perfect. It’s less than 5.5 inches in length and comes with a pocket clip so you could easily carry it with you wherever you go.

It features 5 outputs including a strobe mode. The outputs range from 3 lumens to 1000 lumens and the light has a maximum run time of 430 hours using the 3 lumen lowest mode. Now I’m not sure if that run time is different using CR123 batteries so keep that in mind. Either way, we’re looking at a great run time and excellent Moonlight mode or eco mode as Fenix calls it.

Operating the PD35 V2 flashlight is extremely simple. It has a tail switch that features a momentary on and constant on. It has a side switch that cycles through the brightness levels. The PD35 V2 has a memory mode, a common feature to have in a survival flashlight. Fenix flashlights are extremely durable. The PD35 V2 is IP68 rated and impact resistant so you can take it into the wilderness without worrying about rain or accidental drops. Make sure to take a look at the Fenix PD35 V2 tactical flashlight.

Nitecore EA45S AA Flashlight

nitecore ea45s 1000 lume flashlight

Another bright and excellent survival light is the Nitecore EA45S. This light delivers 1000 lumens and runs on four AA batteries. It’s a bit bigger, over 6.5 inches in length. Although it is quite slim so you could easily put it into your pocket. The downside is that it doesn’t have a pocket clip. Other than that, it’s a comfortable flashlight to hold and is quite powerful.

With this survival light, you have 5 brightness levels and three flashing modes. This light has the most outputs on this list. The brightness levels range from 1 lumen to 1000 lumens. The EA45S has a maximum run time of 416 hours using the 1 lumen mode. You also have a strobe, SOS, and a Beacon for your flashing modes. So if flashing modes are important to you, this is definitely a great survival light.

It has a single tail switch operation making it easy to operate with one hand. You also have a shortcut to the ultra-low and a shortcut to turbo which are great features. Having these shortcuts is preferable in my opinion.

The Nitecore EA45S also features a battery power indicator which is awesome. Battery power indicators are great because they let you check to see what your battery power is at and conserve the battery as necessary. This Nitecore flashlight is extremely durable and IPX8 rated so you know it’s going to be able to withstand the elements. If you’re looking for an awesome Nitecore flashlight, check out the Nitecore EA45S LED flashlight.

Fenix LD42 LED Flashlight

fenix aa flashlight ld42

Here’s another LED flashlight that runs on four AA batteries. The LD42 is a little over 6 inches in length, delivers 1000 lumens, and is easy to take with you thanks to its handy pocket clip. It features 5 brightness levels ranging from 5 lumens to 1000 lumens. It has a maximum time of 103 hours which is still decent, although not quite as good as the previous two flashlights I talked about.

To operate the LD42 AA flashlight, it has a rotary switch. This is either a love-it-or-hate-it user interface in my opinion. It makes it very easy to pick which brightness level you want quickly and it starts in the low brightness level, so it’s great for conserving the battery.

This is a durable Fenix flashlight and is rated IP68. You can expect it to last you a very long time. Make sure to check out the Fenix LD42 AA flashlight.

Surefire Tactician E2T-MV Pocket Flashlight

This is a great pocket flashlight and works just as well as a survival flashlight. The Surefire Tactician is about 5 inches in length and delivers 800 lumens. It comes with a handy pocket clip and is such a small, compact size that it’s easy to take with you wherever you go. It runs on 2 CR123 batteries which are quite easy to come by, though maybe not quite as easy as AA batteries.

It has a very interesting user interface. The tail switch will give you a momentary on only. And then you can twist the tail for a constant on. You have two outputs with this LED flashlight: high of 800 lumens and low of 5 lumens. The 5 lumens is going to last you 94 hours which is a good amount of time.

Surefire flashlights are known for their durability and are often used for police flashlights and duty flashlights. If you’re wanting a compact survival flashlight, make sure to check out the Surefire Tactician E2T-MV.

So there you have it. All of these LED flashlights range in operation, output, and size. However, they would all make some of the best survival flashlights. I highly recommend you take a look at them if you’re looking for the right survival flashlight for you.
