Unboxing and Package Quality

The Streamlight Protac 2L-X flashlight comes in simple packaging, which is nice because it causes less frustration when opening it. The cardboard is red, white, and black, highlighting the name of the LED flashlight, its runtime, and it is 500 lumens. Inside of the plastic, you get:

  • The Streamlight Protac 2L-X flashlight
  • Two CR123A batteries
  • Nylon holster
  • Removable pocket clip
  • User guide

This package contains the flashlight itself with non-rechargeable batteries. However, you can purchase the same flashlight with rechargeable lithium batteries and a USB charger, depending on your preferences.

Build Quality

This is a compact, yet durable flashlight. It is smaller than a penlight but larger than most duty flashlights. The Streamlight Protac 2L-X uses a 5000 series aircraft grade aluminum construction that surrounds the entire light.

There is no plastic on the body of the flashlight except for the glass lens. You can tell how durable this flashlight is just from holding it, as it feels somewhat heavy for a small flashlight. It has an anti-roll head, and the metal construction is designed to handle falls, drops, and even encounters with water.

On the outside of the flashlight, the clip is able to be moved and rotated, making it simple to carry in your pocket or in other tight-fitting locations. This is the perfect flashlight to use in unfortunate situations, like changing a tire in the rain, because it has such a good grip.

The last thing you want to happen when tending to a situation in the rain is to lose your grip on your flashlight. While the Streamlight Protac 2L-X is compact,  it is 500 lumens and has an output of 6800 candela.

The Streamlight Protac 2L-X in Use – How to Operate

It is pretty easy to use the Streamlight Protac 2L-X. A rear click switch is located on the flashlight’s tail end, providing you with multiple modes and settings. If you press it lightly, you get the momentary mode; if you press it hard, you get the constant mode.

Tapping lightly allows you to access the Ten Tap programmable option to quickly move through all modes. To access the high mode, tap once. To activate the strobe function, quickly tap twice. To access low mode, quickly tap three times.

If you are using this tactical light for work purposes, it can easily be attached to a headlamp so you can have a hands-free experience.

The Streamlight Protac 2L-X has a limited lifetime warranty through Streamlight. The limited lifetime warranty protects against any defects within the EDC light. It does not protect against abuse, normal wear, batteries, and bulbs. You will be covered under warranty if you receive the flashlight and something does not work due to a defect.

It will not be covered under warranty if you break the flashlight from an extreme impact, or if it has been submerged in water for an extended period of time. While the flashlight is considered waterproof, you cannot expect it to work after days of being underwater.

Streamlight Protac 2L-X Dimensions and Weight

The Streamlight Protac 2L-X is compact, but somewhat heavier than you expect for everyday carry lights of this size. It is similar to the Streamlight Wedge in its dimensions and weight. These are the dimensions and weight:

  • Length: 5.14 inches
  • Head Diameter: 1.06 inches
  • Body Diameter: .940 inches
  • Weight: 3.9 ounces

The Streamlight Protac 2L-X uses a CR123A  battery. This battery type is a cylindrical cell battery that has a lithium chemistry and is shaped similarly to a C Cell Battery, almost like a can. It is a common type of battery found in many flashlights.

This flashlight is currently priced at about $53, but if you purchase it with the li-ion battery charger, it costs about $61. For everything the flashlight has to offer, such as durability, compact size, and an easy ten tap programmable option, the flashlight is priced accordingly.

Beam Shots

The beam of the 2L-X is good, but I wish the hot spot of the light was more focused and defined, as there is a notable amount of spill. The hot spot of the light is more noticeable and focused at closer ranges, though.

Once you get to about 90 feet, the beam is consistent but the hot spot vanishes. More distance should be able to be squeezed out of 500 lumens, but it does not work with this flashlight because it has a wider beam pattern. The output level is regulated, but it does drop after about 15 minutes to 350 lumens instead of 500. For the majority of the battery cycle, it cannot reach 500 lumens.

  • Ten Tap mode selection
  • Compact size
  • Simple packaging
  • Comes with an extra battery
  • Offers impact resistance

  • 6800 candela is lacking, making it difficult to see in fog or rain
  • Not the best option for emergency use
  • Drops to 350 lumens as the batteries drain

This flashlight can be used for some emergencies, but it might not be a good candidate for all emergencies.

It can be helpful because of its strobe modes, but the brightness is not as intense as it needs to be for certain situations. The Streamlight Protac 2L-X is essentially a new and improved version of the Protac2L. The Protac 2L is only 350 lumens, whereas the 2L-X is 500 lumens. In addition, the 2L-X is more compact than the 2L. The beam distance is also higher on the 2L-X by almost 20 feet.

Final Thoughts

The Streamlight Protac 2L-X is a compact and sturdy flashlight, offering great utility, despite its small size. Its durable design, Ten Tap programmable feature, IPX7 water resistance, and solid build quality make it an all-around tool for various applications.

Although it may not be the best choice for all emergency situations due to its brightness limitations, it is a good option for general use.

The flashlight’s price point seems reasonable given its benefits, with the extra battery adding value to the package. The Streamlight Protac 2L-X may not be the best choice in certain extreme conditions, such as in heavy fog or rain, due to its low candela.
